Culture in nature: Marco Tosi and the highest bookstore in the Alps

In the heart of the Lepontine Alps, at an altitude of 1238 meters, Marco Tosi has realized a dream that combines a love for books and for the mountains: the Alpe Colle Bookstore. This little gem, nestled between Mount Morissolo and Spalavera, in the province of Verbano Cusio Ossola, is not just a bookstore, but a symbol of how it is possible to live sustainably, away from the cities, promoting culture and alternative lifestyles.

Marco's Story

Marco Tosi, a bookseller from Verbania, has always had a deep connection with both the mountains and books. His idea to open a mountain bookshop first came to life in 2014, when he began hosting summer events at his family’s alpine pasture, transforming it into a market of rare and out-of-print books. The success of these events led Marco to leave his city bookshop behind and fully dedicate himself to this mountain lifestyle project.

The Location: Alpe Colle

The Alpe Colle Bookshop is located at 1238 metres, offering stunning natural views. The alpine pasture lies at the heart of the Lepontine Alps, along the historic Linea Cadorna, a trail that passes through Val Grande and Valle Intrasca.

This green haven has become a meeting point for hikers, mountain enthusiasts, and book lovers. Visitors can explore a curated selection of rare books, out-of-print volumes, and used books, covering everything from fiction to non-fiction, botany, and poetry.

Culture, Slow Living and Reconnection

The bookshop’s mission is closely tied to the idea of sustainability and reconnection. The alpine refuge has been restored using local materials, aligning with Marco’s values of respecting and appreciating the environment. But the Alpe Colle Bookshop is more than just a place to buy books; it’s a place where people can reconnect with themselves and nature.

Through cultural events and immersive reading activities, Marco welcomes visitors every Sunday, from April to October, displaying books outdoors, surrounded by nature, fostering an environment that encourages slow living and introspection. As Marco puts it:

The mountains are about horizontality, a slowing down of time, the joy of living at a slower pace.

In a Nutshell

The story of Marco Tosi and his Alpe Colle Bookshop, nestled in the heart of the italian Lepontine Alps, is a great example of how one can balance a passion for culture with a slow and sustainable lifestyle. His project is not just a bookshop, but a symbol of regeneration, creativity, and a deeper connection with nature.

The Alpe Colle Bookshop is a response to the urban exodus, proving that it’s possible to build a successful venture even in remote locations, promoting a space for personal and collective growth. It’s an invitation for everyone to rediscover the joy of reading and living at a slower pace.
