Imagine a journey of almost five years on two wheels, discovering sustainable communities in South America and a new way of learning. This is how the Happy Family BIOcycling covered 25,000 km, transforming the world into their school and their bicycle into their home.

Life-Changing Encounters

Some choices seem impossible until, one day, they become inevitable. Sebastian and Anna met at a party and immediately started talking about travel, adventure, and freedom. About a world without borders and without constraints. In that moment, everything became clear: they had found each other, and they were never going to be a conventional couple.

Shortly after, they decided to leave. It was 2006, he was 25, she was 20. Backpacks on their shoulders, no fixed plans, just the certainty that traveling was the best school. They chose to explore South America, from south to north, crossing wild lands and unknown cities.

A Nomadic Family on Two Wheels

After two years of incredible adventures, Angela, their first daughter, was born. And with her came the big question: “Can we still travel?

"We didn’t want to wait for that day when we would have enough money, enough time, but physically, not enough energy to do what we dreamed of. So, we decided to do it now, as a family."

So, Sebastian and Anna sold everything they didn’t need, rented out their house, and found sponsors for their project. But how to travel with two children without losing their freedom? A car wasn’t the right choice—too restrictive, too fast. They wanted a human-paced journey, one in deep connection with Nature and everything around them.

That’s why, in the end, they chose bicycles.

"With a bike, you are not just a tourist; you become part of the landscape. People stop to talk to you, invite you into their homes, help you if you have a problem. It’s a way of traveling that connects you to people and places in a way no other transport can."

It was the perfect mode of travel: sustainable, cheap, and slow enough to savor every detail of the journey. And most importantly, the bike was playful, an ongoing adventure. For the kids, pedaling meant being part of the journey, not just spectators. That’s how the Happy Family BIOcycling adventure began.

Cycling Across South America

There is no “right” road—only the one you choose to take. With this awareness, the Happy Family BIOcycling set off from Italy, heading to South America.

At first, they had a thousand doubts and fears. But then, they realized that having all the answers wasn’t important—what mattered was setting off with courage, enthusiasm, and trust.

They cycled through Argentina down to Tierra del Fuego, then followed the Andes, across deserts and high plateaus, into Bolivia, Peru, and Ecuador. Along the way, they met indigenous communities, small-scale farmers, and alternative schools.

And then, the unexpected: lockdown in El Salvador. Six months stuck in a place they didn’t know. But life is full of surprises that turn into gifts. That’s where Munai, their third child, was conceived.

In the end, after more than a year of traveling, they returned to Italy. But one thing was certain: they would never stop.

Today, they continue sharing their adventure through their Instagram profile @happyfamily_biocycling, where they talk about travel, encounters, and new projects.

Self-Sufficiency on the Move

Travel light. Live with less. Be free. These were the guiding principles of their incredible journey.

Without rushing but never stopping, they learned to become self-sufficient in every aspect of their lives while traveling. Their energy came from portable solar panels, enough to charge essential devices and minimize their need for electricity.

Food became a daily lesson in adaptation: cooking with local ingredients, discovering new flavors, learning to eat what the land provided—plastic-free and zero waste.

Even their home was constantly shifting: tents, makeshift shelters, and the homes of generous strangers. They realized that, for them, true luxury wasn’t having a big house—it was feeling at home everywhere.

Homeschooling: Learning on the Road

For Sebastian and Bea, education wasn’t about traditional schools, but about learning from the world itself through an alternative education model that is spreading worldwide: the homeschooling.

Their children learned math while cycling, playing fun games. Geography was the landscape around them, the maps they studied before choosing the next route. History was told by the people they met, sharing stories of the places they lived in.

Few children get to travel long-term with their parents, and for them, this experience was like a never-ending school trip—learning and growing together.

More than just a journey, it was an experiment in freedom, proving that you can live with less without giving up anything truly essential.

A Life Without Borders

And now? They know that the world is their home. Today, they’re planning an even bigger adventure: cycling across North America, all the way to Alaska.

But not just that. With dedication and passion, Sebastian and Bea are creating a network of nomadic families, a project aimed at breaking down barriers even further and connecting people who choose to live outside the box.

A utopia that is becoming reality, one kilometer at a time.

In a Nutshell

Five years on the road, 25,000 km cycled, three children raised on the move—Sebastian and Bea chose not to wait for retirement to start living, not to accumulate things but experiences, not to follow the beaten path but to create their own.

Their story proves that you don’t have to wait for the perfect moment to travel. Leaving with your entire family, little money, and no solid plan might seem crazy. Yet, for the Happy Family BIOcycling, it was the best decision of their lives.

And maybe the real question isn’t “How do they do it?”, but rather: “What are you waiting for?
