Porto 15: The First Co-Housing for Under 35s
Co-housing is changing the way we live, fighting the urban isolation of city life and promoting more authentic relationships. Porto 15, located in Bologna, is Italy’s first co-housing project exclusively for young people under 35. In this article, we explore the motivations behind why young residents have chosen to be part of this initiative, how community life works, and the many benefits of this lifestyle, such as affordable housing, sustainability, and mutual support.
What Is Porto 15 and How Does Co-Housing Work?
Co-housing is an innovative concept that combines private living spaces with shared common areas, fostering a strong sense of community. Porto 15, situated in Bologna, is the first public co-housing initiative in Italy designed specifically for young people under 35. This project not only provides affordable accommodation but also promotes social connections and builds a strong sense of community among residents.
Porto 15 consists of five residential floors in central Bologna, with 18 rental apartments that can accommodate up to 49 residents. The shared spaces include five common areas, perfect for gatherings, events, activities, and workshops. The project also promotes a participatory design process, allowing residents to co-create their shared living experience.
The Story of Porto 15
Porto 15 was developed in a previously abandoned building, thanks to a collaboration between ASP (Azienda Servizi alla Persona) and a public-private partnership. These entities won a national bid for the building’s renovation, transforming it into a co-housing project for young people. After a public selection process, 45 households were chosen from 120 applicants, based on criteria such as the maximum age of 35 for at least one household member and an income within the medium range.
Today, Porto 15 includes 17 private apartments, hosting around 30 adults and 7 children. The shared spaces feature a bike repair shop and a woodworking workshop, where residents can share resources and skills. This housing model not only provides accommodation but also encourages meaningful social interaction and cooperation among community members.
Who Can Join the Project?
To participate in Porto 15’s co-housing project, there are specific requirements. The initiative is aimed at young people under 35 who are interested in being part of a tight-knit community and sharing sustainable living experiences. At least one member of each household must be under 35, and income levels should fall within a medium range.
The goal is to create a group of people who actively contribute to community life, sharing values like sustainability, active participation, and the desire to live in an inclusive and collaborative environment. Participants are selected through public calls, ensuring they align with the ideals and objectives of Bologna’s co-housing vision.
Community Life at Porto 15
Life at Porto 15 is all about community interaction. Residents come together for shared meals, events, and activities that encourage socialisation and strong connections. The community meets regularly to discuss goals and new projects, creating a collaborative atmosphere. Active participation is key—everyone is encouraged to contribute with their ideas and initiatives.
Porto 15 residents are also involved in projects aimed at improving neighbourhood quality and promoting social integration. Collaborations with local associations and volunteer initiatives are part of everyday life, benefiting both residents and the surrounding community.
The Benefits of Co-Housing
Co-housing offers a wide range of benefits, both economic and social. Rent is set at a lower price compared to the private market, making this affordable housing model a popular option for young adults. Additionally, residents can develop new skills through shared workshops and activities, enriching their everyday life.
The close proximity of residents fosters a support network, making it easier to get help when needed. Lastly, co-housing encourages sustainable living, from sharing resources to reducing waste, making it a green housing solution.
The Future of Co-Housing in Italy
Porto 15 is not just a housing project, it’s a model that can be replicated in future co-housing initiatives across Italy. As the demand for affordable homes grows, and the interest in low-impact living increases, co-housing could be a key solution that public institutions should fully embrace.
This housing model not only meets the needs of young people but also offers a concrete solution for those looking to live in a community-oriented environment. More and more people are choosing co-housing communities, offering hope for a future where this way of life becomes the norm, rather than the exception!
In a Nutshell
Porto 15, the first co-housing for under 35s in Bologna, marks a significant step toward a new way of living that combines affordability with a supportive community. In a time of growing housing challenges, projects like Porto 15 provide an innovative and sustainable housing solution, laying the groundwork for a future where co-housing becomes a widespread and accessible option for young people across Italy.
